All systems that contain data or host services of any value must be backed up using reliable systems that are monitored and tested regularly. No matter how much redundancy you set up, having several generations of backups is still essential. Today, there are many different approaches, and each has its pros and cons. Ideally, multiple methods should be employed in order to ensure optimum protection of the information that you invested so much in creating.
When these safeguards are not enough or for those truly unfortunate companies that did not heed this advice, there is still the last option of data recovery. Depending on the condition of the storage device, it may be possible to retrieve lost data and still save the day even when no backups exist. This can be an involved process and one that hopefully you will never require with a well thought out backup strategy.
The importance of a viable and properly selected system for backups cannot be over-stated. Without one, you are at the mercy of too many things that can go wrong, such as power surges, viruses, employee error, hackers and so many others. Once the system is in place, it must be monitored and tested regularly or you will have no idea if it will even work when you need it the most.
